Liqueur wine produced on Pico Island - Azores, from the island's traditional grape varieties - Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico -, which grow under lava.
This wine is unique because it is a totally natural fortified wine, without the addition of alcohol (brandy that is added to fortified wines), sugar or yeast. Therefore, its composition depends on the maturation of the grapes, resistance of the yeasts and weather conditions.
Its name is due to its history and international recognition: after the Russian Revolution, in 1917 Pico wine was found in the cellars of the last Czar Nicholas II; it was even referred to as an ingredient in prescriptions and was mentioned in the writings of the famous writer Tolstoi.
